Livingspace Interiors on the cutting edge of furniture “WE ARE a real destina- tion store,’ said Ross Bonetti, owner of Liv- ingspace Interiors at 1550 Marine Drive in North Vancouver. ‘People come from all over (to shop here).”’ Livingspace Interiors celebrated its fifth anniversary in’ February and is now one of Vancouver’s leading businesses for modern furniture, lighting and appliances. “Because of the furniture we carry, only a small percentage of customers are from the North Shore,’’ Bonetti said. ‘‘We sell to people from Alberta to Vancouver Island.** Bonetti, who studied interior design and history of furniture at BCIT, decided after working 10 years in the family furniture and appliance business that he wanted to get more into the clesign fur- niture market. He wanted a store on the cut- ting edge of design. “The cutting edge is modem furniture. Lots of leather. We do fabrics but all in the modern, yet traditional country look.’’ “We have mostly European, that is Italian and French design. But we also shop in North America, North Carolina, to be exact, which is one of the biggest furniture markets in the world. There is not a lot of the desired design made in Canada.” 46 Modern furniture really started in the ‘20s in France and went from there. 99 ~ Ross Bonetti, owner of Livingspace Interiors “There are some really good Cunadian designers, but the Italians and French are further ahead as far as modern furniture is concerned,"* he said. - “They've been in it for years and years.’’ He said wood and primary col- ors are big right now, while the coldness and high-tech looks of the '80s are definitely out of fash- ion. “In Europe, where things used to be quite high-tech, like chrome and leather, the people are turning to wood. Things have softened quite a bit in modern furniture. It has definitely warmed up more than it used to be."” “People like something with a litde bit more warmth. They want their furniture to last a long time. Not only in the actual structure of the furniture but also in the style. “They don’t want to buy trendy pieces that go out of style next month.”” Those who shop at his store are from all classes of society.
