2 - Friday, August 21, 1992 — North Shore News Inuit artist unable to find home on the North Shore | A CAPILANO College art instructor is having a tough time finding accommodation for an Inuit artist scheduled to attend the local campus next month as part of a cultural exchange program. Said art instructor George Rammell, ‘‘It seems that people are scared of natives and children.” Adamie Paneak was selected by the Arctic College in Iqaluit, Baf- fin Island, Northwest Territories, By Michael Becker News Reporter to attend the art institute bronze-casting program at Capilano College. The 35-year-old sculptor has received a federal grant-to enable him to study new techniques. He plans eventually to share his sxills with young Inuit artists through mentor programs. “He already has a proven re- cord of accomplishments in his field, and the cultural exchange for Capilano College would be wonderful. He wiil be a great in- flucnce around the college,’’ Rammell said. Paneak, his wife and = four children need a place ty rent for an eight-month period, beginning at the end of this month. Rammel} said he has spent the past three weeks looking at base- ment suites in the college area. “It’s really hard. For one thing he’s native. As soon as you men- tion Inuit and four children, it's culture shock. I've approached the local bands and they’ve all got housing problems of their own,” he said. Rammell would like to find a rental suite within a 1!0-mile radius of the North Vancouver college. This marks the first time an In- uit arlist is attending the Capilano College art program.
