Rated Mature (at the . Esplanade, Park Royal, Capitol, Dunbar, Richmond Centre, Station Square, Eagle Ridge, Guildford, Willowbrook and Harris Road cinemas) RH... CHRISTMAS in Gotham City. As snowflakes , poh gently fall, a young couple, the Cobblepots (featur- ing Pee-Wee Hesman as Pa) cast their little sprog, Oswald, adrift in his wicker pram. K's their desperate solution to a ‘deformed infant with a taste for household pets. The sewer carries Oswald into a frigid lair beneath Gotham’s zoo where his wails at- tract the curious “Arctic World” penguins. As usual, T.m Burton opens with a great kick-off. But as the familiar strident Batman theme swells, the magic evaporates. Now back te the story. Thirty-three years later, to the day, the Bat Signal alerts Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) that there’s a pack ‘o trouble with a capital T, that rhymes with P and that stands for Penguin (Danny DeVito). As if an egg-shaped, filthy fish- eater raising a flippered fist against Gotham isn’t enough to drive a guy batty, there's also trouble with acapital T that rhymes with C — Catwoman a.k.a. Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer). The former mousy secretary us- ed up one of her nine lives afer being forcibly ejected from her job by boss Max Schreck (Christopher Walken). Selina is spittin’ mad and slashes out against male tyranny in a stit- ° ched-together wetsuit, stiletto heels and a bull-whip. The story has something to do with Schreck hoarding the city’s power suppiy (maybe that’s why the picture is so dark), and trying to get Penguin elected Mayor while slinky Catwoman gives Bat- man a severe tongue-lashing (hmmm, kittylation ). But as quickly as jumbled plot Tim Bell FILM REVIEW developments are raised, they're abandoned in a very disjointed script. The thin characters don’t help either. Schreck is too placid, the vile Penguin is crudely obnox- ious, and Catwoman kickboxes while dropping the occasional cat- ty remark. A somewhat dazed Keaton plods through his dual personality paces. Surprisingly, Batman makes 4 pret- ty ineffective threat against the crime wave (where’s Kobin when you need him). The movie is much more inter- ested in creating a v'sual and aural din. There are a few startling im- ages, as in all of Burton’s movies, but they're diluted after what amounts to an assault on the senses, Cape Fear * *& & (MCA Home Video) Unrated . This is the Robert Mitchum orig- inal, not Martin Scorcese’s recent violent remake. The film relies on Mitchum’s powerful nastiness and audience imagination, and works much better with simpler, cleaner lines.
