Central was first permanent North Y2n school Dear Editor: Re: ‘‘Nothing wrong with Hillside’? (Mailbox, April 5). Your correspondent asked, “Are we foolish enough to believe buildings 30 years old are out- moded, unfit for our children in West Vancouver while North Vancouver still has Queen Mary, its first school?” When the Queen Mary school building was opened in 1915 it was regarded (along with the new Victoria Normal Schoo!) as ‘the finest educational building in Brit- ish Columbia’; it was weil designed, and expensive, which explains why it is still in use. But Queen Mary was not the first school in North Vancouver. The first permanent facility was the Central School, a two-room fructure in 1903, four rooms in 1907, six rooms by 1908, with later alterations, which became the City Hall after Queen Mary school opened, and is today still functioning, as Presentation House. Not including a number of temporary accommodations in various parts of the city and district, North Star (lower school, 1911), Lonsdale School (1911), Ridgeway School (1912), Lynn Valley {second provincial school, 1912) and Keith Lynn School, 1914, were all in service before Queen Mary School was opened. Luzenby North Vancouver Photo showed ° e e eo insensitivity Dear Editor: , Your choice of front page photography (April 24) has left me wondering whether your paper really has a philosophy of printing only the cheap and scurrilous. In a comrnunity that is still as small as the North Shore there are many of us who knew and. respected Dr. Verne Flather, and to see his final minutes of fife represented oa your front page by a bloody hand does not iadicate that you have the least sensitivity or responsibility towards the community you pretend to repre- sent. At the very least I believe you owe an apology to his family . Aslene Jackson North Vancouver BUILD WITH CONFIDENCE New Homes & _Renovations Consultation Design Estimates N.
