Doug Collins ® get this straight ® IN A world in which fools and freaks reach high office, it is sometimes difficult to decide which delightful bit should be chosen for this here column. But Joe Clark wins pride of place today for his bold expedition to Nicaragua. Not content with filling Canada with strange people from ail over, he now has the bright idea of moving the ‘‘Contras’’ here en masse. Yes, babbles Joe, it is “conceivable”? that they could move to the True North as part of his great five-nation peace plan for Central America. far places. The other day, for in- stance, I had a letter from Zim- babwe, Brian Baloney’s favorite dumping ground for your foreign aid dollars and the place where he upped his nerd quotient by em- bracing the Marxist boss, Com- rade Robert Mugabe. Wrote my correspondent: “I | “If South Africa caves in, states my correspondent, it will go the same way as all the other A frican states. Maggie Thatcher, he says, is a heroine for not following Canada and the Commonwealth mob down the sanctions path.’’ Say hello to the Contras and whoever else wants to join the big parade, no doubt. A genius, is Joe. Full of brainwaves for im- proving our lot and bringing blessings to the world. It’s a wonder he hasn’t endors- ed General Don Blenkarn’s plan for a “pincer movement’’ against Souiit Africa via Mozambique and Angola, Blenkarn being the Tory MP for Mississagua. Perhaps Joe is even now plot- ting the details of the Contras’ move, despite Immigration Minister Claude Bouchard's rejec- tion of such folly. (Bouchard had a big bag of complaints from all us rednecks, you know.) Remind me to include Clark’s great effort for peace in my next Mary Collins Golden Turkey | Awards. tk * One of the j joys about writing a column is that I get mail from the Pitch-in have never known a country that has received so much aid in cash, vehicles, machinery and technical and scientific equipment as Zim- babwe has, But where is all this money going? ‘“‘Large numbers of our 8,000,000 blacks are out of work and there are hundreds of thousands dying of malnutrition... “I wonder whether the Interna- tional Monetary Furid is aware of where all the aid is going? Zim- babwe is not benefiting from it. In fact we are deteriorating fast...1f old Smithy (former Prime Minister Ian Smith) had had this financial assistance in the good old wicked colonial days, we would have had a heaven here now. “Efficiency and common sense are non-existent. Of the fleet of 320 buses in Harare, 188 are off the road for want of spare BARRY MORTELL The staff of A.N.A.F. #45 wish to welcome “Our Sunshine Boy” to our staff. Maggie Thatcher, he says, is a heroine for not following Canada and the Commonwealth mob down the sanctions path. I do not identify this writer because it is not safe for people in Zimbabwe to speak their minds. kk o* Here is a follow-up to the Remembrance Day piece in which I gave some names in the West Van Library’s Memorial Book and wondered what their story was. One was W.0.2 FRY, Thomas William, and in his case the answer has been provided by Joan Fry of North Van, his sister-in- law. “Tom was a navigator in either a Halifax or a Wellington aircraft. They were returning from a mis- sion and the craft was probably damaged, because the landing was a mess-up. “All crew members survived ex- cept Tom. He was buried in England at the age of 21, leaving a young pregnant wife in Canada. “Yes, Mr. Collins,’’ writes Joan, “it is a bit too soon to forget.” xk k * Was interviewed this past week for a “‘profile’’? by a CBC Pacific | Report chap sporting a gold ring in his ear. The item is to be shown tomorrow at 7 p.m. Was told that Harry Rankin describes me as a future Dr. Goebbels. [t’s nice to be noticed. YOU'RE INVITED — the largest hobby store on the North Shore.
