Gymnasts shine at meet SIX GYMNASTS from Flicka Gym Club in North Van- couver competed in the first-ever National Cup held in Hamilton on the weekend. Flicka Gym Club’s Lisa Nakano, 14, who lives in Rich- mond, won her second title within a year. Nakano won the 12-14 age group title with a total of 36.567 of a possible 40.00 score. Nakano was also third on the balance beam event with 9.05 in the finals. She led the B.C. team to a fifth-place finish with a total of 105.55. (Ontario led the eight provincial teams with 109.150.) Flicka members Laura Mazur, 12, and Alana Webb, 14, of North Vancouver placed 16th and 28th with 35.00 and 32.70, respec- tively. In the 15-and-over group, three of the four B.C. members par- ticipating were also from Flicka, including Kirsti Mardyn, 16, of Port Coquitlam who placed third with 37.20. Mardyn won the vault event with 9.40, was fourth on uneven bars with 9.20, and fifth on balance beam scoring 9.00. (The winner of the 15-and-over divi- sion was Simone Senior of On- tario with 37.433.) Ernst won the balance beam event with 9.30 and had a high 9.50 and second piace on the floor exercise. Nakano had 9.50 in the junior floor event on the first day. Ray was fourth, tied with Mar- dyn on the uneven bars with 9.20. The 1[5-and-over B.C. team finished second out of seven pro- vinces with a total of 108.60. On- tario also won the senior title with 111.833. This competition is an opportu- nity for the elite gymnasts who are climbing the ladder to the senior and junior ranks in the country. When the gymnasts return home they will be in full training for their own North Shore Invita- tional to be held in February at the new Capilano College Sport- splex.
