Tire pressure mechanics

EVERY YEAR some company or another does a survey
and concludes that over 30% of all motorists are driving
around with seriously underinflated tires.

These drivers are taking a safe-
ty tisk they really don’t have to
take. Underinflation means a
much greater likelihood of
blowouts.

Why are so many drivers taking
these chances? I think the reason
is that a lot of us don’t know
what the tire pressure should be or
— I'm not kidding — can’t figure
out how to work the air pump at
the gas station.

The correct tire pressure for
your vehicle is given in at least
two places: the owners’ manual,
plus on a special sticker hidden
away inside your car.

The special sticker will usually
be in the glove box lid or the

trunk lid, or most likely, on the
inside of the doorjamb.

To correctly interpret the sticker
you may need to know in advance
what size tires you have, because
some cars specify different
pressures for different tire sizes.
The correct tire size is, of course,
marked on your tire.

Now what about those gas sta-
tion air pumps? The truth is that
most don’t work that well. Before
choosing an air pump you should
first make sure that the gauge on
