NEWS BRIEFS Phone frauds THE WEST Vancouver Police are warning North Shore residents to be aware of two suspect teleplione solicita- tion schemes under way in the area. According to a police spokesman one scenario has a caller asking questions concerning home security measures in effect in the home. The calier asks if an alarm system is in place. The caller also aitempts to ob- tain a security code number. In another scheme, the caller advises that the person answering the phone has won a prize. The cailer than at- tempts to obtain a credit card number. The police advise the public not to divulge credit card information or security code numbers over the phone to such callers. Bogus bills THE WEST Vaucouver Police are alerting local businesses about a recent rash of of counterfeit Canadian $100 bills in circulation throughout the Lower Mainland. The police report that seizures of the notes have been confined primarily to Western Canada and Washington State. Although hundreds of notes have been seized, all bear one of the following serial numbess: AJD6410597, ASLOIZ99017, ASLOIZIAG8, AJL9196449, AJMG225435, AIM2669634. Inquiries concerning counterfeit currency may be directed to local police department fraud sections, Notes on quotes, signs and sayonaras NORTH SHORE News clec- tion coverage has included an occasional round-up of small campaign stories and observa- tions in its Election Notebook. The foilowing is another ex- cerpt from that notebook. RUSH HOUR MEMO WwWeES T VA N- COUVER-Capilano Socred candidate John Reynolds knows the importance of an election campaign; he also knews he is unlikely to win any votes if he upsets North Shore rush-hour commuters. Reynolds has therefore told his campaign workers not to stage any political demonstra- tions on Lions Gate Bridge ap- proaches or on any other ma- jor intersections within the riding during cush hours, According to a_ Reynolds press release, ‘‘the efficient flow of traffic is important to the citizens of the riding...che staging of demonstrations only serves to create congestion, which is unfair to the electorate and unfriendly to the environ- ment.’’ RE-ELECTION COR- RECTION SPEAKING OF John Reynolds, his campaign signs should be of interest to voters. The signs teli West Van- couver-Capilano voters to “re-elect John Reynolds.’ Just one problem: Reynolds has never been elected in West Vancouver-Capilano, neither has anyone else: it’s a brand new riding. SOCRED SIGN O.K. THE SEPT. 29 Election Notebook reported that both North Vancouver-Lonsdale Socred candidate Marilyn Baker and the riding’s New Democrat David Schreck were violating a North Vancouver City bylaw by displaying “sandwich board’’ signs in front of their offices. That bylaw prohibits such signs from being displayed on city sidewalks. Turns out the Notebook erred and gave the city more sidewalk space than it actually has in front of Baker's campaign office, located at 115-1433 Lonsdale Ave. Her sandwich board sign is actually on private property and not city property. And what about the Schreck sign? It has since been remov- ed. LEFT FIELDER THE FOUR candidates in the North Vancouver-Seymour riding were recently sitting in the staff room of Windsor Secondary School prior to an all-candidates debate with Grade 11 students. When the teacher organizing the event told the candidates that some of the students’ questions may come from “‘left field’’, Socred candidate Gor- don Frampton turned to NDP candidate Dominique Roelants and said: “Notice how 1 didn’t say you could handle those ques- tions?”’ END OF AN ERA IT’S THE end of an era for veteran North Van- couver-Capilano MLA Angus Ree and the *‘for lease’’ sign in the window of his Lonsdale Avenue constituency office says it all. The 62-year-old Ree, who has held the riding for the Socreds since 1979, has decided to step out of the political arena for a quieter way of life on the Sunshine Coasr. But Ree doesn’t leave B.C. politics without leaving — his mark in the history books. Ree was the first solicitor general appointed by a B.C. govern- ment. 4 Saturday Oct. 12 a Monday Oct. 14 Friday, October 11, 1991 ~ North Shore News - 5 Gas station robbed _ The suspect is described as be- ing approximately 25 years old, 5°8"’, of medium build with A NORTH Vancouver gas station attendant was robbed Oct. 5 of lottery tickets.
