After reading in the North Shore News about Weickardt’s world class performances, Izzard asked Weickardt, 77, for guid- ance. The two athletes, who train with the NorWesters Track and Field Club, set to work. After eight months of training, Sprint earns triathlete victory NORTH VANCOUVER’S f:ici: Montgomery won the Vanesu:<- International Triathlon on Sunday with a sprint to the finish line. Montgomery, 25, edged France’s Isabel Mouthon by five seconds with an overall time of two hours, three minutes and 28 seconds. The VIT course — 1.5- kilometre swim, 38K cycle from English Bay to UBC and back and an Ji-kilometre run around StanJey Park — is the same course as the Teleglobe English Bay World Cup Triathlon that Mon- tgomery was forced ta abandon two weeks ago because of a flat tire on the cycling leg. Meanwhile, triathlon newcomer Leslie Diver, 29, of North Van- couver, finished [7th overall. The VIT is only Diver’s second full course triathlon and her fourth tiathion ever. Her time was 2:31.07. in the men’s event, West Van- couver’s Colin Dignum finished 19th overall with a time of 2:05.27. Masters Championships. Most recently, lzzard and Weickardt travelled to Finland for the World Amateur Veterans’ Track and Field Championships last month. A record number of masters athletes — 5,052 — came from 53 nations for the championships. However, hampered by a sore foot, Izzard fell aut of medal con- tention, Weickardt, the 1989 world 4 u champion in the 400 and 800 metres, said an injured hamstring prevented him from repeating his performance. “Pm sorry that | couldn’t bring home gold as [I used to,’? says Weickardt. “I gave the others a chance this time. 1 will be back at the next world championships in two years, watch out!"* ivzard and Weickardt are hop- ing to organize a masters track and field group on the North Shore.
