PRS CEE RRR ESET RENESAS SESS ovis 2) Seeds ALPS RTOS A et Ny ‘Fortress’ is typical Elric fare The Fortress of the Pear! {A Novel of Eiric) By Michael Moorcock Published by Ace Books MICHAEL MOORCOCK has preserved a style of fantasy writing that got its start in oid sci-fi and fantasy mags. In Review LOOKS AT BOOKS { would include in this genre such works as the Conan novels and Edgar Rice Burrough’s john Carter of Mars series. Not exactly an involved charac- ter study, it’s a rather two-dimen- sional but highly imaginative, comic book-like style that has much the same appeal as comics or action movies. The Elric Saga (seven novels and one short story) is linked closely to over a dozen other books as the Eternal Champion series. in which Elric is one of several incarnations of the same soul. Elric is the crown prince of the Melniboneans, who, for centuries, have lorded over the Young Kingdoms inhabited by Man, and who have declined in the de- cadence of their absolute power. Elric is an albino and a weakling, kept alive by herbs and by (what Moorcock never calls) a deamon sword called Stormbringer. The sword eats the souls of those it kills and imparts some of the energy it gains to Elric. The Fortress of the Pearl actually takes place in the middle of the original Elric books and is rather typical Elric fare for the most part. The writing is somewhat sparse, action oriented and plot-driven, but generally contains some in- teresting scenes if one really pays attention and imagines them vivid- ly: ‘overhead they could see a sky like diseased pewter in which dark, leathery things flew and communicated with desolate cries above palms whose leaves resembled nothing so much as viridian skins stretched out to await a sun which never rose.” Elric himself has changed over the years. In the old takes, Elric had a decidedly evil streak in him. In this story he seemed too caring and noble-minded, as if this Elric had sat on the shelf for a few years, mellowing. — By Ross W.
