ee 28 - Friday, February 9, 1990 - a Nosth Shore News AUT @OM OT I Most child seats are installed incorrectly From page 27 ICBC statistics show that less than half of all child seats are installed correctly. The most common error is the failure to attach the tether strap at the top of the child seat. The tether strap prevents the child seat from tipping forwards or sideways on im- pact, lessening the chance of the child’s head striking the window, pillar, or another person. In a sedan, the tether strap should be attached to a boit on the rear parcel shelf. In hatchbacks, vans and trucks, this bolt may have to be positioned on a strong steel foundation on the floor or wail behind the child seat. The safest location for a forward-facing child seat or a rear-facing infant seat is in the middle of the back seat. It is acceptable for an infant seat to be placed in the front passenger seat if the driver needs to attend to the baby. However, an infant or child seat placed in the front seat where there is a con- tinuous lap/shoulder belt must use a locking clip to secure the seat. The locking clip is provided by the man- ufacturer with the seat when purchased with instructions on how to use it. When shopping for a child seat be sure to look for the label that says the seat meets Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Despite the overwhelming evidence that child seats prevent injuries and save lives, many parents continue to hold children on their laps or let them move around THE ONE STOP DIRECTORY FOR ALL loose inside a vehicle. Being a parent myself, 1 know how difficult it is when the baby wants to be fed in mommy's arms while the car is in motion. My suggestion is for one of the parents to move to the back seat next to the child (who is already in his/her child seat). If there is just one parent, it's better to pull over to the side of the road and take care of the child before proceeding. The alternative is to risk disaster. The enormous deceleration forces involved in a head-on collision can best be illustrated by this ex- ample: in a 50 km/h colli- sion with a solid object, the force of an unrestrained eens 986-8473 NORTH VANCOUVER <= -O— child hitting the dashboard is equivalent to the child being dropped from a three-storey building. In every case, it is better to be safe than sorry.
