Time spent absorving Joni Mitchell, Richie Havens and Harry Belafonte, and a period spent tightening up ensemble ticks at New York’s Bitter End, have paid off. On Feb. 1 the Greater Van- couver Operatic Society brings a remount of Alan Jay Lerner’s and" Frederick Loewe’s musical to Cen- tennial Theatre. Directed by Keith Simpson, Brigadoon runs Feb. 1, 2, 3,8, 9 and 10. First performed at the Ziegfield Theatre in New York in 1947, the musical features colorful 18th cen- tury costumes and music by Loewe. The story is based on the book by Lerner. North Vancouver's Norman Leggatt, whose works have in- cluded the original productions of My Fair Lady, Oliver and Fiddler On the Roof, is the show's choreographer. SOUND MICHAEL & BECKER record review Luba shakes off some of the slick hi-tech fixtures that turned Be- tween the Earth And Sky into a big seller for the Montrealer. Luba, who is starting to sound like Canada’s fernale answer to John Cougar Mellencamp, lets her gutsy voice do more of the talking. Luba’s at her best on numbers like Wolo Bringing it All Back Home, where she does it up simply and with sentimental directness. Strip away the rock ‘n’ roll bells and whistles and you find melody. The Roches — Speak, MCA Re- cords 1989 The association that began “in the back seat of our parents’ car’ has evolved. The Roches bolt on some new hardware to the family car stereo system, roll dawn the windows and ease into an electric glide. Their seventh release kisses-off homey guitars and piano and buys into the programmed world of synthesized music mak- ing. The microchip aural wash complements the trio’s crisp vocal synergy.
