TERRY Abrams from North Vancouver District and Freddy the Fireiruck keep school children amused snd in- formed on fire safety rules. Department teaches that prevention begins at home INSP. TERRY Abrams adheres to the simple philosophy that the best way to reduce fire deaths is to educate the public about fire safe- ty. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reports? And because 85 per cent of fire deaths oc- cur in the home, Abrams and the North Vancouver District fire prevention office are trying to get their message to kids in schooi with a program designed to encourage the kids’ participation. The district depart- ment has an ongoing edu. -tional fire safety program and will be visiting schools throughout Fire Prevention Week. From Oct. 5 to 7, the North Vancouver District department will have a mall display at Lynn Valley Centre with Do Bee, the department’s mascot. On the Saturday, the fire safety house will be at the mall all day. Brain child of late Lieutenant Kenneth J. Flemming, this miniature house goes on tours as an educa- tional tool to teach children how to escape house fires. The kids actually go into the upstairs of the house to ai small bedroom where simu- lated smoke is pumped into the room. From here, kids get a first-hand experience of what action to take next. They learn to roll out of bed, staying on their hands and knees because the cleanest air is on the floor level of the room. They feel the door for heat and then open the door. But smoke comes up the stairs, so the kids are told to seal the crack with a pillow and to find an alternate escape route. There are three other ways out: a rope, a retractable ladder and aut the window to an outer staircase. Once safe, the kids get rewards such as color- ing books and balloons, al! with a fire safety message. The district depart- ment also has a robot called Freddy the Firetruck to keep the kids’ attention during displays. Operated by remote control, Freddy talks with the kids, issuing fire safety messages and asking questions of the kids. A favorite with the kids, Freddy’s tights flash when he gets a correct response.
