article market with Communica-
tions 190 (Magazine Article Writ-
ing) or get your novel published
with Communications 280 (Mar-
keting Commercial Fiction).

Communications 190 has pro-

duced three columnists for Van-
couver’s daily papers, and many
students have gone on to successful
careers in freelancing or staff
journalism. Students write three
articles, revise them and submit
them for publication in Canadian
or foreign periodicals.

“Last spring seven students sold
their work before the end of the
term,’? says instructor Crawford
Kiliaw. ‘‘I was pleased, but not
surprised.”

The course meets Wednesdzy
evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. on the
Lynnmour campus Gust north of
the Second Narrows Bridge in
North Vancouver), and will run

from Sept. 6 to Dec. 13.

Communications 280 (Marketing
Commercial Fiction) can kelp
novelists and short-story writers
get their work into salable shape.
Emphasis is on genre fiction such
as mysteries, thrillers, romances
and science fiction.

The course covers everything
from storyboarding a plot to
reading the fine print ina contract.
Course work may include minor
revisions to a completed manu-
script, or three short stories, or a
novel outline and a couple of
chapters.

Communications 280 meets on
Tuesday nights from 7 to 16 p.m.
on the Lynnmour campus from
Sept. 5 to Dec. 12.

Both courses carry transfer cred-
it to the Creative Writing program
at UBC. Each costs $110. Students
can register at Capilano College on
August 28 or in class on the first

night.
