Pool drop-in rate too high

The North Shore civic pools are
very pleasant to use, with good fa-
cilities. They are certainly a refuge
from the dinosaur pool on Beach
Avenue downtown which leaves a
lot to be desired.

These rates are already higher
than West Van’s, which struggles
with only one pool, aud I find the

A five or 10 cent increase might
be tolerated and I challenge the
North Vancouver Recreation
Commission to reduce it to that,
regardless of what their accounting
sheets might show.

OPEN LETTER TO MR. PECK

Thank you for your letter with regard to the in-
crease in health club drop-in rates.

‘With reference to the actual fee increases, these
rates are set by the North Vancouver recreation
commissioners each year in November so that both
individuals and groups affected by such rates do have
time to prepare properly for increases.

You should be advised that the North Vancouver
Recreation Commission is a separate constituted
body, providing recreation services to the citizens of
the City and District of North Vancouver. We are re-
quired by the joint bylaw to produce a balanced
budget cach year and I am pleased to report that we
have been able to do so for a great number of years.

In order to achieve this balanced budget, the two
councils, utilizing funds acquired from the local
property taxpayers, provide approximately 50 per cent
of the funding for the organization. The other 50 per
cent of the cost te operate is recovered through reve-

nues charged to the various users. The various user
fees are set with this responsibility in mind.

With cegard to your specific situation, it is true that
the drop-in health club rates have been increased some
35 cents per visi’. If you find this increase to be too
much, I would suggest that you consider purchasing a
monthly health club package, which was increased by
only 5 per cent from $27.30 to $28.50.

1 should note too that if you were a resident of the
City or District of North Vancouver and you were
facing financial hardship, our staff would be more
than pleased to offer some leisure counselling and, if
necessary, provide some financial assistance, utilizing
funds from a special recVoucher Program.

Finally, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank
you for your kind comments with regard to the quali-
ty of service being provided by our organization.
