‘Copter pad creates stir

The proposed helipad, on the
boulevard by the Mag pole just
north of 13th Street, would be us-
ed for emergency medical evacua-
tions to Lions Gate Hospital.

The residents, speaking Monday
at a public information meeting at
North Vancouver City Council,
accused city staff of not looking
hard enough for a potential land-
ing site away from the boulevard.

They also feared commercial
flights would start using the facili-
ty.

Suggested alternative sites in-
cluded Mahon Park, grassy areas
near Cleveland Dam and the foot
of Fell Avenuc,

But city administrator Gerry
Brewer said the other sites have
steep and unsafe landing ap-
proaches for the helicopters, or are
too far from the hospital.

He added that under the present

situation, with no designated land-
ing site, the law says pilots carry-
ing medivac patients can land their
helicopters anywhere they find
space.

“We see this happening every
one or two weeks as a. safety
hazard,"" he said.

Designating a specific landing
site would enable the city to place
restrictions on routes for approach
and departure.

The pilots can currently fly over
houses, which a regulation could
prevent them from doing, Brewer
said.

Dr. Norman Hamilton, of Lions
Gate Hospital, said that already
this year one helicopter almost
landed on a car in the parking lot
of the hospital.

“There are lives at risk more
than the lives of the victim. At the
present time the situation is unsafe
for the emergency personnel,” he
said.

Ambulance service district
supervisor Douglas Holmes said
there have only been 17 landings so
far this year. He added two other
facilities similar (o the one at Lions
Gate will be opening soon in other
parts of the Lower Mainland.
