IF YOU want more than just color
in your spring garden, hyacinths
are the right choice for you.

Among the most fragrant. of all
bulbs, only a few are necessary to
perfume an entize garden. They
will be especially appreciated if
planted near the main door: that
way, both you and your visitors
will be reminded of their presence
each and every time they enter- er
leave the house.

of course, Dutch hyacinths are

- strikingly beautiful flowers as well.

Their short stems are densely
covered with star-siiaped flowers in
a variety of hues. Although most
people are aware of traditional
pink, blue and white hyacinths,
many do not know that there are
many more colors available.

City of Haarlem, for example, is
a ‘delightful pale yellow, while
Orange Boven is salmon. orange
and Amsterdam. a_ brilliant red.
Even in the traditional. colors,
there is a great deal of variety, in-
cluding every shade of blue and
pink.

Nostaigia. buffs should enjoy
double-flowering hyacinths.
Although less popular these days,
they were all the rage in the 18th
century when Madame de Pom-
padour, mistress of Louis XIV,
made them popular in the courts
of France. Try the delightful
Hollyhock, a double hyacinth of
the purest red.

If you prefer the rather less
formal appearance of heavy hya-
cinth flower spikes, try multiflora
hyacinths. Specially treated, these
several flower
stems, each bearing only a small
number of bloor:s, “ther like
large, colorful lilies-of-:..e-valley.

You will note too that, after
producing a single spike of blooms
the first year, even traditional hya-
cinths will divide and produce a
similar display in years to come.

Experts recommend planting

hyacinth bulbs in the fall when the —

soil temperature has fallen below
16°C. This generally occurs from
late September to early November.
Hyacinths prefer partial shade.
Avoid planting them in areas
which receive direct midday sun.

Good drainage is essential.
Break up and loosen the soil to a
depth of 25 cm. If the soil is heavy
with clay, mix in an organic mate-
rial such as peat moss or compost
in amounts of up to SO per cent of
the upturned soil volume. -

Plant the bulbs 20 cm deep from
ground level to the base of the
bulb. Space them 15 cm apart.
Once the bulbs are in position,
cover them with half the dug out
soil and water the area. Add the

again.

Cover the planted area with an 8
em layer of organic mulch. Keep
the soil moist, particularly during
dry spelis.

Plant plenty of hyacinths for the
sweet smell of spring.
