4 - Wednesday, September 24, 1986 - North Shore News Bob Hunter t © strictly personal JUST WHEN the rest of us were starting to notice that the “80s are turning out to be puritunical, straight, disciplined and even obsessively wholesome, Mr. Brian Mulroney has detected an epidemic of drug abuse. Amaging! OF course, thomas be that, his: ing kicked a couple of mayor drug addictions himself, te is simply being esangelical. | You know how us reformed junkies get. We tend to turn into holier- than-thou sealots, IP doen't know bos many packs aoday Mulroney did) a what quantity of sauce he guzzlea, but by most reports he was a rege lar fella, all right, smokin’ his cace off and slanimin’ back te suds. He could get in ere with the guys and gals at. press club and keep pace, which is saying a lot. As everybody must know, jour- nalists as a species tend to be heavy-duty boozers, right) up there with doctors, fishermen and bankers. The pressure, you understand. In fact — you may not know this — the reason we are called the ‘tpress’’ goes back to Gutenberg and his printing press, which was aot sa mutch an origl- nal invention as a contbination cd inventions, one of them being the device they used (to squash grapes. That’s right, the first type was set using nothing more than a wine press. Always keep that in Bimind as you glean through your paper. The media are actually an offshoot of the vineyard, sothing less. But back to Mulroney and his crusade to save Canadians from the drug abuse plague. It’s a bit like saving us from South Africa, J isn’t it? I mean, excuse me, sir, are we talking the same Janguage, the Queen's French? 1 Things may be different in f Manicouagan, but here in Lotus Land, the statistics all point to Goodie Two-Shoes being the new cultural role isodel, not Easy Rider. Convictions for drug offences are down, not up, by something like 13 per cent. Recreational il- legal drug use has peaked and, if anything, is starting to fall. Who was the last peer you encountered who had started a new vice? Come on. Meanwhile, as per usual, the body count from legal drug abuse continues to mount. Ling cancer, heart attacks, road deaths, etc. Mr. Mulroney quit alcohol and nicotine at the same time, I'm told, after a buddy told him his chances of making it to 24 Sussex were zip if bubbles and smoke kept coming out every time he opened his mouth. Timm, come to think obit... Oh well he DED quit, And beating either ot those addictions soa menumental task. | Doing both at the same time requires mucho macho will power. i] salute hii. The keen-eved reader will know that yours truly quit suck - ing down nicotine juice some eight: years ago, but what will come asa dacdling reveladon is the pews Chat Bhiave been on the wagon since the beginoing of September. There are more polite phrases to describe the process of not boozing, but | like ‘ton the wagon.’ It has a down-home {lavor. Not too pretentious. It means that basically you are wrestling with the brute animal inside that just wants to get blot- ted. Not everyone has a problem with alcohol, Certainly | don’t. My problem is | have too much fun. That is, of course, up to a point, Ho, ho. Anyway, no big deal, Most people I know are affected by the health craze. Sin just: another petal blowing in the invisible cross-currents that stir the mass semi-consciousness, Getting off nicotine is the key move, of course. But reducing your alcohol intake is right up there as a way of being nice to the sacred temple of the body and all that. It is strange, though. Once one has gone cold turkey, one suddenly cannot help but notice that there are an awful lot of people still puffing away, polluting the air. Why, it’s like an epidemic! As for hootch, well, Lord love a duck! This society is positively Bacchanalian. You don’t really notice il so much when you're drinking, because, after all, isn't everyone? 1 just keep getting this feeling that Mr. Mulroney is out of touch with basic issues. If he’s worried about drug abuse, why not outlaw cigarettes and beer and caffeine and sugar and tranks and diet pills? Get real, Brian! Reaganesque cowboy stuff about gunnin’ down the dope smugglers is a total sideshow. The really big drug problems of our times are all of the above, with the drugs that the law doesn’t like, amounting to not much more than the hors d’oeuvres at the feast of perfectly legitimate deadly toxins.
