UNEMPLOYED FOR 5 YEARS lan protests lack of jobs VINCE ANDERSON says he’s tired of being a bum, but Employment and Im- migration will not help him find a job. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter On Monday, the 32-year-old North Vancouver resident set up a one-man picket line in front of North Vancouver’s employment centre to protest what he claims is discriminatory treatment from the centre’s employment placement counsellors. Anderson said Tuesday he has tried unsuccessfully for the past six months to get job referrals from the North Vancouver office. “I'm being railroaded. They don’t want to help me. They don’t want to recognize me.”’ But supervisor for employment services Gordon Chow said Ander- son has made repeated violent threats to a number of the North Vancouver counsellors. ‘Right new, after our experi- ence with him, we are hesitant in sending him to any employer.’’ Chow said Employment and Immigration had asked Anderson to undergo private diagnostic testing to determine his employ- ment attitude and goals, but that Anderson refused to provide in- formation requested by the diagnostician. But the North Vancouver man said he was willing to undergo diagnosis and had notified the North Vancouver office. He admitted losing his temper with a counsellor at the North Vancouver office about four mon- ths ago, but only out of frustration at getting no appropriate job referrals. Prior to 1980, Anderson said he had been a fisherman, a plumber, a landscaper and an oil rig worker. “I was always working, ever since I was 16. I did everything.” But in 1980, Anderson was hit by a car at Broadway and Gran- ville. He spent two years in casts. A subsequent back injury, he said, left him unable to do certain types of physical labor. Anderson turned to welfare. “But I don’t want to be a bum any longer. It gets very depressing. I am willing to work.” To that end, Anderson, who has bee:: classed as a special needs employee by Employment and Immigration, said he has taken book-keeping courses and training as a security guard. Thus far, Anderson said, the on- _ ly referrals he has had have been two landscaping jobs, which, because of his physical condition, he could not accept. Anderson said he will now seek legal advice for his predicament. loss?
