West Van police get top marks

THE WEST VANCOUVER Police Department received
straight A’s in a recent report’ card from the B.C. Police

Commission.

viding an excellent level of service

The audit, which is conducted
by a six-member team from the

commission, examines the -effi-
ciency and effectiveness of the
department, including its zecord
keeping, financial control,
discipline, complaints procedures,
service to the community, firearms
use, training and pursuit pro-
cedures.

“It’s just normal for the West
Vancouver Police Department,’’
said Humphreys. ‘‘The West Van-
couver Police is as good as there

is.”

West Vancouver Deputy Police
Chief Hal Jenkins said the audit is
an important overview of the
department, which turned up no
glaring problems.

But one area of concern the
audit did note was the depart-
ment’s radio system, although this
is already under study by West
Vancouver Council.

Auditing of municipal police

departments by the B.C. Police
Commission started five years ago.

The audit teams, made up of
five or six. men seconded from
both the RCMP and municipal
police forces, examine two or three
departments a year. Each of the 12
municipal departments in the pro-
vince is audited at least once every
five years.

RCMP detachments are not.
