with motor vehicle injuries.

A telling link between blood-
alcohol levels and violent deaths
has emerged from a study of 57
unnatural deaths among San Fran-
cisco youths aged 12 through 24,
occurring during the year July
1981 through June 1982.

The 42 males and 15 females in
the group died of the following
causes:

°Accidents (26cases)— 14 motor
vehicle related and 12 not motor
vehicle related

*Suicide (14 cases)

°Homicide (15 cases)

°Unknown (2 cases)

Blood-aicohol concentrations
were available for 51 of these 57
cases. Overall, 20 of the 51 victims
(39.2. per cent) had significant
blood alcohol concentrations —
equal to or greater than 0.02 mg/dl
(100 ml) of blood. Sixteen of the
51 (31.3 per cent) were legally in-
toxicated by the most conservative
standard, with alcohol concentra-

Among accident victims, 12 of
24 (50 per cent) were intoxicated,
and the rate of intoxication was
the same for motor vehicle acci-
dent victims (7 of 14) as for other
accident victims (5 of 10).

Although intoxication did not
play as great a role in suicides, 3 of
12 suicide victims (25 per cent) had
been drinking prior to the lethal
event. Of homicide victims, 3 of 14
(21.4 per cent) were intoxicated,
and all had become involved in
altercations with strangers.

Twelve deaths occurred in
youths 18 years of age or younger,
and tI had evidence of alcohol in
the blood. Five had levels equal to
or exceeding 9.10 mg/dl, in-
dicating intoxication.

Signs of drug abuse were present
in three victims, and cocaine tox-
icity played a role in one death by
drowning. There were three cases
of accidental overdose of drugs,
not related to alcohol.

Motor vehicle accidents are the
most common cause of mortality
in youths, yet in this study they
account for a minority (25 per
cent) of the unnatural deaths.
