AlO - Sunday, June 24, 1984 - North Shore News inquiring reporter by Ellsworth Dickson here is quite a controversy going regar- ding the new Terry Fox Memorial at B.C. Place Stadium. It seems a few like it, but most people don’t. Let’s get a few res- ponses from North Shore residents. Today’s question is: ‘“What do you think of the Terry Fox Memorial?’’ Kevin Burstow North Vancouver 1 don’t care much for it. | would rather have seen the money go for cancer research. He wants to be mayor of West Van. Reid’s aim to. seek the municipality’s top elected office has been common knowledge in local political circles for several months. After Mayor Derrick Humphreys referred to it publicly at a recent Lions Club meeting, Reid = an- nounced formally last week that he would be running for mayor in November . At the municipal level, candidacy announcements so far ahead of the election date are unusual. Mayor Humphreys, first elected in 1978, is widely expected to run for re-elec- tion to a fourth term. A recently retired” en- vironmental officer with Trans Mountain Pipe Line Co., Reid served eight years as mayor of North Van City, retiring in 1977. After a four-year absence from public hte he re-entered the local political arena in West Van, where he ran unsuc- cessfully for an aldermanic seat in 1981, 1982 and again last year Meanwhile, he became TOM REID ... Wants mayor’s job active as vice-president of the Ambleside Ratepayers Association, is a past president of the Central Ratepayers Association and presently heads a more recently formed group known as the Combined Ratepayers Committee. In the past few months this group has launched vigorous attacks on certain policies and actions of the current council, especially in relation to the new Crown Foreshore Lease and _ pen- ding negotiations with the Squamish Indian Band over the future of Ambleside Park. As mayor of North Van- couver City, Reid earned the reputation of an able and successful administrator. At the same time he attracted regular headlines as a col- orful and autocratic figure, prone to confrontation TRIDONT DENTAL CENTRES announces DR.
