C6 - ~ Wednesday, September 1, 1982 - North Shore News FUN IN SASKATCHEWAN When “WHERE HAVE you been lately?” is the question I often am asked, with the person looking at me hopefully for an answer like “ I recently replied, oon 2 © 99 ji” or “Tunisia ‘Melfort, Saskat- chewan,” I earned peals of laughter. “Broke like the rest of us, eh?” Many ‘people tell me that they have met marvellous peopie. on vacation — however, the friendships have lasted five minutes longer than it takes to unlock their own front door on their return. [ve been luckier than that as a good many of my travel friend- couples from California and one from Melfort. What is odd, too, is the age range between the eight of us — one couple is late 20s, one late 30s, one mid-forties and the fourth 60ish. Over the year, we've kept in touch. Phone calls, visits and letters, in a connecting network from the U.S. to Canada. Six of us got together in Melfort. Must add that a marvellous time was had by all, with the same Conversations and belly-laughs as last year. Wait had his guitar and we yowled along, late into the solved ail probiems. Whenever the world’s you get Canadians and Americans together, certain differences arise. Some are laughable — especially when the Americans get to saying “Eh?” as often as we do. Some aren’t quite so funny — our American friends felt downright naked without the handguns that they pack ‘around as a normal course of events down South. “I never leave the house alone without mine,” announced Nancy. Both she and her husband work in professions that call for a lot of evening meetings (she’s a supervising teacher for the learning disabled; he’s a social worker). They had considered hauling along a trusty snake-shooter but learned that Canadian law is quite specific on the subject. Canadans don't find the average American very knowledgeable about Canada. These friends of ours have such an en- cyclopedic knowledge of our country that it kept us on our toes. Doesn't do to show your ignorance of your own country! But, something worried me. They consider that Canada is everything the United States SHOULD be ~— idealizing to an unrealistic degree. “Lock our truck? Hell, no. We're in God's country.” by Barbara McCreadie I grew. up in Southern Alberta, but after many years in B.C., I've lost a lot of my “wheat farmer's kid — prairiefied” outlook. I find screen doors a pain in the butt but so necessary to Canada’s mid-west. They raise flying insects that tear chunks out of human hide. -F'd_ also forgotten the speech pat- terns of many of the farming folk of our prairies. It was fun to listen to some friends of our hosts, speaking like people I grew up with. An accent, faintly mid- European and the word “already” laced into every third sentence — as in, Heading for the hills IT seems that people are flocking to “Beautiful British Columbia" to spend their holiday:‘money despite the general economic gloom. Tourism Minister Pat Jordon, in Fort Nelson, said business on the Alaska Highway is better than at any time since 1977. This report confirms the minister's previous belief that visitors are venturing deeper into B.C. and are taking more time to explore the north. “The highways up here are in excellent shape and the weather has been simply glorious so far this year,” said Mrs. Jordan. “Our drive lo give visitors a fair cx- change rate and first class service is working and proves that nothing attracts like superb scenery and a square deal.” The minister was in Fort Nelson for the naming of Andy Bailey Lake. Bailey. who died last year, was one of the original B.C. pioncers who, as a community leader, worked so hafd to promote the north and organize its now well above average facilities. Jordan made her trip to ‘northern B.C. to conduct discussions on the tourist potential of the area with local businessmen and of- ficials.and to gain input from these groups.
