t A2-Wednesday, October 15, 1980 - North Shore News Uy 2 Strictly personal by Bob Hunter I don’t see how the members of West Van council can possibly even consider letting Fisherman’s Wharf marina be cannibalized for yet another townhouse development — and still call themselves responsible elected officials. The application by In- ternational Land Cor- poration to have part of the wharf rezoned to allow luxury strata title units ts clearly not in the public interest. The truth is, the boat facilities down at Fisher- man’s Wharf are priceless. Virtually anywhere else in the world, I'm sure they'd be recognized as such. To wipe them out and replace them with (oh hum) a townhouse development is a magnificently forgettable idea. West Van _ needs another townhouse development like a hole in the head. More to the point, where's council's spirit of place? NV City OK’s family North Vancouver City council last week approved terms of reference for a North Vancouver famuly court committee - a com- mittee that each municipality ts required to have by the provincial government. District council approved the terms for the committee three weeks ago and City counci! approved the same terms despite recommended changes by persoancl director Bruce Hawkshaw. The ame person com- mittee will “serve as a honk between the community and our justice service,” Alderman Elko Kroon, who served on the committec, said Alderman Gary Payne inquired what good the new committee would be and intenm what) probiems mt would solve. I mean, West Van's most fabulous asset is its proximity to the Pacific. Why, then, are public boating facilities more rare than peregrine falcons? As it is, West Van should be embarrassed with itself for failure to maintain adequate docking facilities. Horsefuzz, Mr. tgomery! Boaters in the Burrard Inlet-English Bay-Howe Sound area are already so desperate for moorage. so strapped for facilities where their boats can undergo any kind of repairs, that the situation is tragic. In case members of West Van council don't know, a entire block of boat facilities down by the Bayshore Inn was recently obliterated, leaving Vancouver-area boaters scarcely any place to Mon- turn to get essential work done. . To displace yet more boaters from Fisherman's Wharf, wipe out mvaluable repair facilities, eliminate already outrageously limited public access to the foreshore, and at the same time to knock out a fuel station, sounds hke mayhem (not planning) to me. A council that went along with such a stupid scheme ought to be transferred to Moose Jaw, where their talents could be used. As for the developer who proposed the plan, what can I say? Obviously, he should have to spend every weekend in Winnipeg for the next 10 years of his hfe. I asked North Vancouver's Captain Mike Williamson, a 30-year veteran of the sea, what he thought about the idea of ruining Fisherman's Wharf to plunk down one more luxury development, and he made a point which, in the final agalysis, is the most umportant point of all: safety- “There is a definite safety factor,” he said. “Over at Horseshoe Bay, you have B.C.
