Shore a little warmer ENTERING A room of strangers can be intimidating, unless it is a meeting of the Newcomers Club. “We always like getting new people and we make a point of said Cecilia Doborzynski who is presi- dent of the North Vancouver Newcomers Club. The local club has 70 members now and is basically a social club for women, Doborzynski said. Doborzynski moved to Van- couver two years ago with her husband and a small child and decided to join the club after she spotted an ad in the paper. ‘‘l never belonged to a club before,- but I was not working and had a child. Joining the club made my first year in Vancouver a lot casier and ! felt happy in a few months,”’ she said. Anyone interested in joining the club will be offered a ride to the monthly meeting. At the door she will be met by 2 club executive and welcomed. If the newcomer decides to join she will be invited to a coffee party at an executive’s home together — with other new- comers. At this informal meeting the newcomers have an opportunity to meet each other and talk about their hobbies, interests and where they have lived. “I think they make friendships with people who By ANNELIES RAVENSBERG ; Contributing Writer join at the same time especially,”” Doborzynski said. Many have travelled all over the world and have moved a fair bit in the past, Doborzynski said. ‘‘We have people from Indonesia, Australia, the U.S. and from ali over Canada,’ she said. ‘‘That’s what makes people so interesting.”’ The club has several mixed socials so husbands can join and meet others as well. The theatre group meets monthly and visits a show. Other mixed events are ski evenings in winter or picnics in summer. But the most popular mixed social is the Amateur Chefs. Four couples meet in a couple’s home and bring a gourmet course that ‘fits such themes as Mexican or Greek cooking. “*You get people out to that who won't go to other things,’”’ Dobor- _zynski said, adding that the socials offer an opportunity to meet a real variety of people. Moms and Tots gives mothers a chance to chat while children play and that group meets weekly for morning coffee. The Stitch and Chat club is for knitters; and bridge players meet for the Bridge Ladies Evening. The women also meet for a monthly luncheon. ‘‘You can get as involved as you want to, you can join a few groups or a fot,” Doborzynski said. The monthly club meetings are highlighted by speakers on such themes as gardening, women and investment or knitting. The fast meeting featured a fashion show of hand-knitted sweaters. , The executive changes every year to encourage new members to take an active role. ‘‘Some people are on the executive board after a few months and it is a good way to meet people,’? Doborzynski said. The club is a member of the Newcomers Council which has numerous branches throughout Canada and the U.S. Although at most clubs the membership’ is limited to two years, the North Vancouver .Newcomers Club allows members to stay on. ‘‘We- are a small club and our members - stay for an average of three to four. years,’’ Doborzynski said. The club also helps the food- bank’ and Emily Murphy House. with money raised through auc- tions and raffles. ‘“‘We try to put something into the community,’ - Doborzynksi said.
