Dear Editor: Further to your article concerning the McLaughlin automobile article on page 11 of your March 9 issue, I __have the following com- 1. Statement: “By 1907, McLaughlin’s slogan. had become Canada’s Stapdard | Car.” Comment:. Not true. The first car. was not produced until December 1907 and the make had not “proved” itself in public.’ That slogan was used in later years. Also, after the chief engineer fell ill, the McLaughlin’s made a deal with Wm. C. Durant to supply them with Buick engines and other parts from Flint Michigan. Thus, the Buick connection. 2. Statement: ‘‘The McLaughlin nameplate....” Comment: Should read that the “McLaughlin” nameplate was used until 1923 after which “McLaughlin-Buick” was used on cars in regular production until 1938. “McLaughlin-Buick” con- tinued to be the official name for registration and advertising purposes until production of cars ceased (because of the war) in early 1942. The former Conservative government started negotiations last fall with the Canadian subsidiary of the U.S. automaker to provide guaranteed loans worth up to $300 million. At the time, Economic Development Minister Robert de Cotret said the federal government was also “McLaughlin-Buick” oa their hubcaps (not “McLaughlin” alone) and sill plates. These were the last automobile to actually have the compound -name~ in- scribed_on them. 3. Statement: (under photo) “Canada’s Standard Car was the name Robert McLaughlin gave to his autos way back in En- niskillen,. Ontario.” Com- ment: McLaughlin automobiles were never built in Enniskillen, only Oshawa. Further, it was probably Robert's son, Sam, who coined the phrase. There were four official 1939 Royal Tour Cars: the two McLaughlin Buicks above (one now here, one in Oshawa), a Lincoln con- vertible (now in the Henry Ford Museum) and a Chrysler convertible (present whereabouts unknown. Since the latter car may also be in the Vancouver area, 1 would be most grateful if you would publish my wish for any warm or hot leads! I will forward a photo is desired. Vern M.
