In last week's column, I attempted to explain just
how the decline of the dollar, the strengthening of the |
Japanese yen, the CAFE mileage standards, and (most

climate had led to my relinquishing my Datsun fran-
chise. Past and present évents did weigh heavily on,my
decision to switch to the LINCOLN-
MERCURY/FORD TRUCKS banner, but future

to this whole chain of events. ;

That the fall of the dollar was a major factor in our
leaving the Datsun organization can best be illustrated
by the price increases it forced on rted goods.
1978 saw the retail price of a Datsun 510 (formerly a
low priced model) soar at the incredible rate of $150 a
month! $1700 over 12 months. All import cars are
threatened by this situation (even Honda’s meteoric
tise has been dramatically slowed) and in a way, it's a

lucky break for our North American auto industry, as -

for the first time, they're serious about going after the
markets opened up by the foreign manufacturers. You
now see a whole range of domestically made small cars
(and more are in the works) ‘atone end of the scale,
and Mercedes-like luxury models at the other end.

But even those top-of-the-line models.are no longer
the size they used to be. This is all part of the massive
Detroit “downsizing” program you may have gotten
wind of, and the U.S. Government CAFE gas mileage
standards are probably the prime reason for this
trimming of excess weight. The CAFE (Corporate
Average Fuel Economy) standards decree that in 1979,
car manufacturers must show a 19 mpg average
throughout the range of cars they sell in North
America. AnJj this figure goes up every year, too,-so
that by 1985, the average miles per gallon for a
manufacturer's range of cars must be 27.5! The 1979
standards have been met, but big changes are due to

against manufacturers who fail to meet the annual
averages, taxes are being proposed for cars that exceed
the allowable limits, availability of V-8 options will be
decreased, and if that isn’t enough, mileage standards
are in the works for light trucks! All the safety and
pollution laws of the past decade have had an enor-
mous effect on cars but the CAFE standards just may
have even more effect. More than anything, CAFE is
why American “big” cars don't look as big as they used
to (shaving weight is one of the casiest ways to gct
better mileage), and the cars are probably going lo pet
smaller yet ... and more sensibly designed as well.

There's a noticeable “International” flavour now to
domestic cars and as space utilization becomes an even
more important aspect of design, you'll see our
manufacturers adapting the best features of European
and Japanese cars. The all new sporty Capri and the
intermediate sized Monarch are but. the latest exciting
examples of this trend. There's a lot going on in the
world of cars - the 1980's will sce some kacredible

advances - and we'll do our best at trying to put it all -

into perspective each week in this column. If in some
