B.C. initiates gun restrictions

USING FEDERAL legislation, the provincial government
plans to place severe restrictions on the ownership of
large-capacity niagazines for firearms effective July 1. |

A’ magazine is any device or
container from which ammunition
may be fed into the - firing
chamber of a firearm.

According to a statement from
Attorney General Colin
Gabelmann’s office, the new al-
lowable limit will be 10 rounds for
handguns and five rounds for ri-
fles and shotguns.

Previously, there were no limits
on the capacity of magazines.

Local firearms collector Mike
MacNeal said that the legislation
could endanger collectors’ pieces.

He said a pre-First World War
magazine called a ‘‘snail
drum"? — with a capacity for 32

some large-capacity magazine
owners from the prohibition: pro-
vided they designate shooting
competitions where the magazines
would be used.

If no competitions were desig-
nated, then no exemption would
be allowed.

The attorney general said both
gun owners and gun contro! ad-
vocates were consulted before a
decision was made in B.C. not to
designate any competitions.
