It’s driving me insanc.” It’s all about music for the 24-year-old British singer- songwriter who is making a western swing as the opening act for Travis next Thursday at “the Commodore. The daughter of a Norwegian shipping magnate and a Swedish mother, Naess _, was raised in London as part : of a large extended family. ” She has 10 siblings from ‘different marriages © and counts Diana Ross as a former stepmoth- er. Leaving the fold at 18, Neess moved to - -. New York to study at university and strike out ° ‘on her own. “It was to get away from my family,” she laughs. “It was scary and exciting. . Strong lyrics com- ~ bined with an avant folk approach to the music distinguish Naess’ sound. Producer Tommy D keeps everything on track, handling the material with a light touch and letting the performer decide the direction of the material. “I try to have the skeleton of the song there so I don’t write it in the studio — it’s pretty much done and then I decide how to dress it there,” says Naess. As a young star on the rise Naess is much - in demand this summer. After leaving Travis later this month in L.A. she and her band will start their own tour as headliners in Denver. The band sampled mild success with its 1996 debut effort ..somenmbere More Familiar, which led Universal to re- release the album in late °97. The second crack sent record sales well over the one million mark on the shoulders of the smash single “All For You” and followup tack “Happy”. Five good ol’ boys out of Gainesville, Fla., Sister Hazel cooks up'a tasty selection of tracks on Fortress, blending - two parts guitar with a cup of Granville idand Suge 2 Shows for ‘5! for*55 ‘distinctly thick, country-fried twang. Highlights include the bluesy “Save Me” and the plaintive “Out There”. The best track — and the band’s best hope for a hit summer single — is “Thank You”, in which heavy, grating guitars help deliver the per- _ fect, fast-paced kissoff to a failed relationship. And of course, as frontman Adam Duritz had his nervous breakdown after the Crows’ first tasted success, lead singer Ken Block tackles his new : burden of | fame with the six- minute epic “Hey Jude”-style title track at the end of the * album.
