Harvest - Wednesday, Octcber 11, 2000 ~ Morth Shore Mews ~ 43 Can-do attitude needed From page @ about Canada is nothing personal — re equally ignorant about other coun- tries, and tend to hold benign views about their northern neighbour. Simpson was also intrigued by the number of people he talked to who hadn’t taken out American citizenship, even after years of hiz- ing in the States. Most had settled permanentiy and happily in the U.S., taking advantage of betier career opportunities and higher carniag power. They had no intention of retucning home, “and yet they continued to differentiate them- selves as Canadian. Despite the fact that Canadz allows i its cit- izens to maintain dual nationality, “they're not willing to fully give themselves up to America,” says Simpson. “I interpreted it as sort of signalling to themselves that I’m in this country, | admire this country, but Pm not willing to geo all the way to becoming an American. And that said something about the tug of being Canadian. “One of the things that always fascinated me about this group is that they’re the only group of immigrants that can be hidden. Because if you're from, let’s say, Great Britain, your accent’s immediately going to signa! that you're not from America. If you're an Asian, your skin colour and other things are going to give you away. But if youre a Canadian, apart from a few tics of Wallpaper ‘| Books — * Broadway Store 1852 West Broadway Vancouver, BC : .. 731-5858 Harine Drive Store” 222 SW Marine Drive | Morth Vancouver Store ™ 1629 Lonsdale Avenue North Vancouver, BC 985-0823 Teri inal Store 225 Terminal Avenue Vancouver, BC - Vancouver, BC > 689-4414 "321-2216 © <» Eom Fes Inzonmutton: Cloverdale Paint bi, a member of ther British Cotuinbia + and mew paint waste to dispose of it in a safe manner. They would refer to cultural signposts: ‘1 miss hockey’ — hockey came up all the time ‘I miss the CBC. I miss Tim Hortons doughouts’.” Preserving a sense of Canadian identity, says Simpson, has “never been more difficult, because we are in a much more integrated North American economic sphere. We have this influence of U.S. mass popular culture, «as the globe. We happen to be on the fre: ee of it.” However, “too many of the folks who've left expressed frustration at the rather closed- shop attitude that many Canadians have. We need, if 1 may say so, a bit of the American restlessness and the American can-do spirit. Certainly what many of these Canadians liv- ing in the States remarked upon to me was that the Americans, whether you love them or hate them had that kind of can-do attitude that we could use here.” A documentary version of Sear-Spangled Canadians, made - by“: Sirapson < sith Vancouver's Paperny Films, airs Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. on CBC Television. —°- “oo “SALE Ens GCTABER 2. -..
