Car Program takes donations of old cars to raise money for people suffering from kiduey disorders. The program also helps to clean up the envi- ronment by stripping the old cars and recycling usable parts or melting down the unusable ones. “We have a fair share of donors from the North Shore,” says Steve Street, the foundation’s regional fundraising coordinator. Essentially, people took- ing to dump their beaters can call the foundation and donate them. An auto wreck- er will come by and pick up ~ ~ the car. “It's a convenient way to get rid of a car,” Street says. Junkers typically are worth $50 and the majority of tax receipts issued by the foundation are for $50. So the owner gets a tax receipt, the foundation sells the car to the wrecker and the wrecker gets the car and its useful parts. ~ The remainder of the car, more than likely, will be" taken to Richmond Stecl and_. melted down after being stripped of its useful part. “We have recycled more: than 4,000 cars now,” Street: says, pointing out-the pro- “gram started in 1995. “The pirogram’s ‘getting to be four or five years old,” he says. “Mind you, we're’ getting more cars than we - ever have.” . : Not all cars donated to the program, however, have been junkers. “The mest valuable car we've got to date was a $2,800 car.” All they can hope for now is a better price for salvaged . . steel. ; . “The price of scrap steel has plummeted,” he says. “We want the price of scrap steel tu go up.” . The program was origi- nally developed in United States where every state now runs a similar pro- gram. Eight Canadiana provinces run one as well. To donate « junker (or any other car for that matter) call 327-CARS. Owners must have proof of ownership. Cars can be brought in or towed away. the” zs awy toe.
