Our position is that ift e the provincial govern- mene could build the Alex Fraser Bridge without putting any tolls on it, and e the provincial govern- ment could find $1 billion to fund the Island Highway, then the provincial government should also pay for the Liéns Gate Bridge. That is its responsibility in the first place. It is, after all, raking money out of our pockets ta cover highways. We think it is nothing short of criminal to allow this bridge to deteriorate to the extent it has. We fully understand the concerns of Vancouver resi- dents having more traffic impact on Vancouver’s envi- ronment. With more than 160,000 car trips a day con- verging in Vancouver from the North Shore, the citizens of Vancouver have enough prob- lems already. Rather than finding alter- native solutions, as in putting greater emphasis on public transportation, —_ including rapid transit to the North Shore when much of the infrastructure such as rail lines are already in place at both sides of the inlet, the minister still insists that this is not a viable option. We also sympathize with the residents of Vancouver to preserve Stanley Park from further encroachment. For all these reasons, we have sug- gested a more sensible solu- tion to the Burrard Inlet ques- tion whereby the provincial government should: 1. Consider fixing the Lions Gate Bridge and mak- ing it safe; 2. Give serious considera- tion to a tunnel linking the existing rail facilities, both on the Vancouver side and the North Shore, via a light rail fink. All the transportation experts, including some from other parts of the world who have looked at this problem, are shaking their heads in dis- belief that the provincial gov- ernment has ruled out this option when it makes such eminent sense. It is clear, that the B.C. government is masking its real intentions in a plethora of “double talk” and outdated, bankrupt transportation schemes. It is clear that the provin- cial government wants to use this opportunity to create another “cash cow” for itself without coming to grips with the real transportation needs of the region. We are in full sympathy with Vancouver's desire to preserve the livability of Vancouver, just as we are committed to do the same for the North Shore. It would appear that our provincial government lacks total vision and has total contempt for the citizens of our Lower Mainland in its desire to maintain the livabil- ity of our region, as well as our health and our pocket books. Vancouver and North Vancouver in particular, must cooperate much better to thwart the. attempts of the province to turn the region into a “concrete jumble” along with immeasurable harm to our health and envi- ronment. Dear Editor: My name is Bram Rutherford. fam a Grade 5 student at Cove Cliff elementary school and I'm writing to say that I think that you should keep the snags in the Parkside Creek pond up. 1 am saying this because the snags provide good nesting places for birds and they are also a home for insects (a good food supply for the woodpeckers that I see regularly).
