HE OTHER DAY my five-year-old an-
nounced that he didn’t believe in God any
more. It seemed a bit early for Willie to hit

his existential despair phase.

*“Oh, what’s
blem?”’ I asked.

He went on for quite a
while about how. his
kindergarten teacher was the
awfulest persOn-in the world,
the other kids wouldn’t listen
to his every utterance and
how he hadn't had a new Jedi
warrior toy for weeks.

Indeed. It’s a_ pitiless
jungle out there, I agreed.
But what had all this suffer-
ing to do with God?

*‘God’s not nice to me any
more,’’ he announced
gloomily.

Well, I knew how he felt.
I’ve had days like that, too.

It crossed my mind to tell
him the entire history of life
on this planet so he’d see for
himself that there have, in-
deed, been entire epochs
when it seemed that God had
abandoned the world, not
just my wee lad’s corner of it.
