- market segments in the auto-
motive industry, but not.

In fact, most people never drive
their Nissan Pathfinders or Jeep
Cherokees off the paved roads —
they are primarily used as a com-
muter car, Rather than these vehi-
cles’ off-road potency, it's their
rugged ['m-tough-and-strong image
and utilitarian character that have
helped sport utilities achieve such
astounding sales success today.

The sport-utes aren't without crit-
icisms, however. Many owners —
especially the Generation X bunch
—- complain that even the best mod-
els suffer from vague handling and
slow response. ‘They maintain that
the 4X4 vehicles perform no where
close to the sports coupes they used
to own.

For this exact reason, Hyundai
has developed a new type of car that
combines the best of both worlds:
the Hyundai HCD-IIf. Though the
car is still in the concept stage, there
is a strong indication that this innov-
ative concept vehicle may someday

Car thieves ‘have a new way to °

beat every car alarm on the
market. With'a “code-grabber”,

was unveiled at the recent North
Aierican tateruational Auto Show
in Detroit.

“I's neither a sport utility vehicle
nor @ sporty coupe, but a hybrid of
the two,” says Mike O° Brien,
Hyundai's national manager of prod-
uct planning. By combining the two
seemingly opposite types of vehicles
—~ an impractical, performance-
minded sports car and sensible.
drive-everywhere sport utility —
Hyundai has come up with an ulti-
mate no-compromise car.

Even the styling of this concept
car is mystifying. Look at it at from
far away and the car appears like ¢
Toyota Celica or Eagle Talon on
steroids. But as you come closer to
the HCD-HM, and notice the bulging
fenders and muscular-looking body
contours, the car suddenly looks
more like a utility vehicle than a
sports model.

The 2+2 concept coupe is pow-
ered by a DOHC, 16-valve 2.0-litre
four-cylinder engine with variable
valve timing and intercooled turbo,
and is driven via fuli-time all-wheel-
drive system. With a whopping 240
horsepower on tap and 201 [b.-it. of
torque available. the HCD-H1 is any~
thing but a (ame machine.

The strong pewerplant, anti-lock
brakes, independent suspension, und
fast-response steering assures that
this car won't disappoint the owner
when he or she wants to use it as a
pure sports car. Now push a button
on the dash, and the HCD is quickly
raised via an adjustable suspension
system, giving it a truck-like road

. clearance. This, combined with the

all-wheel-drive system, air-oil com-
bination shock absorbers, and
chrome-moly front/rear subframes,
‘makes this car a truly capable off-
roading machine.

Would Hyundai really market a
car like the HCD-Uf in the future?
No one knows for sure, but if con-
sumer reaction is overwhelmingly
positive. they wouldn't have any rea-
sot not to produce the car.

Put it this way, if Hyundai
doesn't turn this concept into a reali-
ty, someone else probably will...
