ing as many “tin fish” from a U-boat
whose commander raised his
periscope to see he was about to be
run over by the capital ships of the
Med fleet.

In one of the ironies of life and
war, Wade discovered that U-boat
commander, Hans Dieter von
Tiesenhausen, is a Canadian citizen.
Wade was able to talk to him and get
his version of the engagement,
which makes for one of the most
exciting chapters of the book, since
turbulence from the battleships’
wake tossed the desperately diving
sub briefly back to the surface. Had
Wade written the book immediately
after the war, as he started to do, it
would flack that kind of glimpse
from the “other side”. Instead. he
says, “I got married, put the book
aside”, busied himself with a naval
career and a second career in health-
care administration. A chance meet-
ing, appropriately at sea on a B.C.
Ferry, with Hal Lawrence, the late
Dean of Canadian naval writers, led
him to exhurne the manuscript and
bring it back to life.

“Hal said, "} want you to finish
that book and send it to me.”

Wade not only finished the book,
he’s now at work on another: a biog-
raphy of John Parker, an ex-RCAF
flyer who became « judge in the
Northwest Territories and fought for
better native health care, against res-
idential schools and for territorial
democracy in the late 1940s and
1950s when the North was. still
administered by commissioners who
never left Ottawa.

It’s not such a radical change of
subject for a writer who witnessed
the often tragic, but by no means
futile, heroism of the Mediterranean
war at first hand.

“When you look at things Ji ke the
disastrous raids to support Tobruk
from the sea, the Dodecanese raids,
you wonder sometimes, “Were we
really accomplishing anything?’ ~
