Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW ICHARD CHAPMAN sells coffee beans and does five filtered coffees ‘on tap each day at Saunders & McLennan —- The Coffee Merchants at Lonsdale Quay. Yet caffeine is not the primary fuel for the 31-year-old who grew up in North Vancouver. Music provides the real jolt. A couple of years ago, PolyGram showed laudable foresight in get- ting behind a project Chapman, then living in Toronto, and his musical circle of friends cobbled together. Moose Records begot Moose: The Compilation and Moose Lodge, two won- dertul snapshots of a stream of alternative music bubbling just beneath the mainstream sur- face in Ontario. Artists including Grievous Angels, Rheostatics, Lost and Profound, Positively Stompin’, Bob Snider and The Bookmen received national exposure. Mass-cuitural homogeneity had no place in the realm of the Moose. The compilations acknowledged and exposed a new generation of musicians unabashedly Canadian and unafraid to give voice to unique _ muses. Chapman acted as executive producer for the Moose projects. At various points along the way he managed Rheostatics and Grievous Angels. He continues to sharpen the cutting edges of popular Canadian music. His local incar- is nation, Nod Records, has linked with PolyGram to bring to the world Busted Flu$h, Pretty Green and Positively Stompin’. ~, Music-Now recently spoke with Chapman. Music Now: How did Moose come about? Chapman: “! wanted to do the music thing because there was so much there and ! was friends with the Grievous Angels. | was man- aging them. : “Grievous Angels had an inde- pendent cassette out in 1989. So then other bands within our circle decided to do this thing as a col- lective statement of our commu- nity. The end result was the first compilation which was going to be like a calling card representing our roster. PolyGram called us right away really excited about it and we got a deal for two Moose releases. NOD RECORDS’ Richard Chapman pours a cup of coffee at Lonsdale Quay's Coffee Merchants. Fellow caffeine jockey David Smith (background) fs a jazz guitarist, by the way. Music Now: What breught you back here? “| was separated and my daughter is out here.” Music Now: Did you manage Rheostatics before you linked up with Grievous Angels? Chapman: “! was managing Grievous Angels first and then | started working with the Rheostatics. Initially they had brought me on to help them shop their record and we were doing shows together with the Grievous Angels. | managed them for a while until-my life crisis.” Music Now: So you got to Vancouver and still had an itch for music? ; Chapman: “We completed the contract for Moose and | tried to fet them going on some new things, seme of the albums | was working on before | left (Toronto) — Pretty Green, Busted Flu$h, Positively Stomping. “They kept on putting it on the back burner and so we said OK we can go independent, we can do it and we'll just have to work harder. Then PolyGram phoned us out of the blue and said we want to do it. “We finally figured it all out. At first Grievous Angels were going to be part of it, because they had this great album com- pleted, but they've done it inde- pendently.” Music Now: So what do you see Nod as? ; Chapman:'“It's almost and independent A&R thing. We're trying to set itup so that we're presenting bands that we like and we're willing to get behind in a profes- sional way. Using PolyGram or any other major label for that mat- ter is just a far more effi- cient way to get to every- body. “You don’t have to have all of this over- head and you're serv- ing the most important thing, the project, the band.” Music Now: Where based? NEWS photo Neil Lucente Chapman: "At home and at the coffee shop, which is the North Shore connection. The coffee shop and has helped sponsor some of these projects. Roger Procopio (the owner) gave us some money and was supportive right away.” Busted Flu$h — Between Time, Nod/Vertigo/PolyGram 1994 Fabulously psychotic stuff from a Torento band bent on bending AM radio oldies grist.
