Be aware of kids’ choking hazards DISTRICT OF — North Vancouver Fire Services wants you to know that choking can occur in babies and young children when food or smalt objects clog the airway. ER A YC HOT TIPS By North Vancouver District Fire Department Death may result if the airway is completely blocked. If an object is inhaled into the lungs, it can cause serious breathing problems, Newborns and infants have a high risk of choking because of their immature throat muscles and small air passages. Toddlers are also at risk because they like to put everything in their mouths. In 1993, the B.C. Ambulance Service responded to 270 emer- gency calls for choking (airway obstruction) of children from birth to 1f years. Over 80% involved children under uge six. In a study of children treated in Canadian pediatric emergency departments, the objects most often involved in choking incidents were bones, fruits and vegetables, can- dies and gum, nuts, other foods, and coins. Items choked on or swal- lowed by babies treated recently in the Emergency Department of B.C. Children’s Hospital: stones, coins, pins, batteries from television remote controls, watch batteries, buttons, small plastic toy pieces, adhesive tape, and a key chain. Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada warny that balloons have been associated with several chok- ing deaths of young children, The rubber material used for balloons easily sticks in the throat and can block breathing. Toys labelled “not suitable for children under three" means that there ure small parts which could cause choking. Hot dogs are a common cause of choking in toddlers and young chil- dren because a bite-sized piece has the size, shape and consistency to form an exact plug for the airway. Hot dogs should: be cut length- wise and then cut again into smaller pieces before being fed to children younger than school age. Plastic on disposable diapers should always be covered with clothing. Adults can also help prevent child choking injuries by: {J Grating hard fruits and vegeta- bles for young children. ( Making sure toys are free of small parts. CJ Learning emergency first aid skills for choking. C1 Teaching children to sit quietly while eating or drinking. J Keeping coins, buttons, batter- ies, keys. earrings, and other small objects out of the baby's reach, The above information was pro- vided courtesy of Safe Start, B.C.
