ANCOUVER HAS a new hot spot — the Purple Moose. The Moose, at Hornby and Davie, replaces an Italian restaurant which, although it was very good, had a com- pletely unmemorable name (I can’t recall what it was). Louise Aird BRIGHT. LIGHTS CFMI presented the opening and North Van’s Jody Vance did a great job of handling the broadcast and keeping the crowd happy, with a Let’s Make A Deal-style prize draw where guests won prizes according to what their purses/pockets contained. Co-owner Fred Bilawey (the other owners are from Winterpeg) thought of everything. Menus are newspapers (en- vironmentally incorrect, Fred), so moist towelettes — the kind you keep in your glove compartment — are provided. A tattoo artist does temporary skin designs, and Shiseido has set up an entire makeup selection for teuch-ups. A few Northshoreites showed. North Van's Glen ‘I need new Topsiders”’ Ringdal, the Canucks’ VP marketing, was pondering the dough the team lost by getting knocked out of the playoffs, and West Van’s David Wolfin showed . off the prize he'd won at the Dia- mond Conference — a 4.99-carat diamond from Zaire. Also there was North Van's Robert Kwong, back from the B.C. Professional Press Photography Awards at Banff, where he wen for his Molson Indy Photos Series ‘‘Rapid Transit.’’ And West Van native Nicola Parker was taking a breather from promoting the Qatuwas Festival, which you may want to attend if you're in the Bella Bella area Sun- day, June 27. Indigenous peoples are coming from around the world for this ~~ revival of indigenous maritime traditions, and Roy Henry Vickers did limited-edition prints, two of which were presented to Boris Yeltsin and Bill Clinton at the summit. There are four guys: the presi- dent of a grocery store chain who's at peace with himself thanks to his men’s group; his lawyer, a cynic whose girlfriends get younger every year; and a fellow men’s group member named Robin (‘‘not Rob’), a Robert Bly-quoting New Ager who got his $400 crystal at Birks. Davies plays the fourth guy — a flatulent, beer-swilling rube who's the produce manager at one of the | boss’ stores. The men go on a “guys’ weekend” in the great outdoors. Robin purposely leaves the food behind so their inner beasts will be forced to hunt and gather, and Jackson gets the group lost in the PURPLE MOOSE owner Fred Vance of Rock 101-CFMiI. Along the way, they debate the wording of ‘Beans, beans the wondertul fruit; recite bad poetry (the lawyer’s poem consists of movie titles), sing bad songs (Robin’s is about a dance between a bee and a flower), and chase a bear away by chanting ‘Go Bruins, got’ Even when touching on feelings of guilt, confusion and anger toward their fathers — and talk about how men are misunderstood (pshaw) — they manage, for the most part, to keep it funny. The play runs to Saturday, July 3 and is definitely worth seeing. kkk West Van has had some noteworthy departures.
