Alien art move

First-time director David Fincher takes decidedly
non-sci-fi approach with new instalment in series

IGOURNEY WEAVER as Ripley, believe it or not,
gets alienated for a third time with an intergalactic

stick insect.

When her shuttle crash-lands on
sub-arctic penal colony, Fury 161,
the lice-riddled killers resent the
sole female on their planet. Al-
though she’s a lanky baldie with
wicked jaws, Ripley is not quite as
terrifying as a familiar drooling
stowaway that snacks on frontal
lobes. But this time, there are no
weapons.

. Alien cubed avoids the space
marine antics of Aliens and returns
to the moody suspense of the orig-
inal. The atmospheric gothic set
design is suitably oppressive and
the special effects are top-notch.
The mostly British cast (especially
Charles Dance as Ripley's first date
in about 60 years) is excellent.

However, with a script laden
with subtexts of woman as alien,
death’s five stages (anger, denial,
bargaining, depression and accep-
tance), and Biblical references, it's
more than a sci-fi movie, it’s an
Alien for analysts.

TIME TO enjoy the traditional

to impart a fresh herbal spiciness
to the punch.

The classic recipe, tasted at the
nands of a sadly missed German
friend who poured it from a huge
Dresden china water-pitcher, is
dangerously simple:

@ one bottle of Asbach Uralt
brandy;

@ two bottles of Rhine wine;

@ and two bottles of chilled sekt
(German sparkling wine).

A more refreshing and less
devastating version can be based
on a mere four to six ounces of
cheap brandy, just for taste, one
chilled magnum of Henkel!
Trocken (not the best sekt avail-
able, but perfect for punch), and
one chilled magnum of Kircheimer
Schwarzerde Kabinett (basic in-

Unfortunately, it takes forever
for these two fightin’ Irish to reach
the Oklahoma land rush. Arriving
in Boston, the forward motion of
their pioneer dreams and in-
evitable romance grinds to a halt
as Joe becomes a boxer for Bean-
town’s underworld.

Despite a flabby script, the
70mm photography captures the
Emerald Isle in all its misty glory
and the sounds of the Chieftains’
folk music is invigorating. ohn
Williams’ overblown score is less
successful.) This colorful, totally
untaxing entertainment has some
good laughs (such as Kidman
peeking under a strategically plac-
ed'pot on Cruise’s nether regions),
but Far and Away runs far too
long.

Excellent character actors
(Wilfrid Hyde-White, Lionel Jef-
fries) enhance the shenanigans in
this hilarious British entry from
Hammer Films.
