Six selected for U-15 squad SIX NORTH Shore players have been picked for the under-\5 soccer squad that will represent British Col- umbia this summer in tour- naments in Ontario, Oregon and the United Kingdom. The six players selected to the under-15 squad are: fan Andrews, Ryan Beggs, Will Ferry, Todd Pelly, Joel Perkins and Bobby ‘hornton. Five of the six are from the North Shore Selects team coached by West Vancouver's John McKenzie, 4 former British Col- umbdia Lions football player. B.C. soccer officials say the selection of the six, who live in al! three North Shore municipalities, is a sign of the continuing strength of youth soccer in the area. “The North Shore, more than any other district, has been the major supplier of players to the various provincial and national teams,”’ says Keith Liddiard, B.C. Youth Soccer Association execu- tive administrator. Liddiard says 50,000 British Columbians now play soccer, thanks in large measure to the professional success of the Van- couver 86ers, Canadian Soccer League champions. “Since they've won four straight national championships, our registrations have gone up each yesr. This year we'll have about 40,000 at the youth level. In 1985, we were down as low as 33,000,"" said Liddiard. Publicity given to qualifying games for this year’s Barcelona Olympics and the 1994 World Cup in the U.S. has also boosted the spart’s image. Liddiard says many North American universities now offer soccer scholarships for both male and female players. Soccer, he adds, is a game that is cheap to play compared with hockey and football. Three other members of the North Shore Selects team, David Boehmer, Chung Ming Ip and Ali Kashfia, were selected to the under-14 squad.
