HOROSCOPES ‘Heads I lose, tails you win’ IN MY therapeutic counselling practice, I facilitate com- munication between people who do not know how to keep a discussion from becoming a fight. Arguments can appear out of nowhere and leave everyone furious with nothing resolved. Last Sunday’s column and the next few provide pointers to help you avoid useless battles. “Heads 1 lose, tails you win. The double-message trap:’’ Double-message fights are pointless. Nothing can ever be ac- complished by them. In a double-message dilemma, you appear to have two very dif- ferent choices of behavior, But you. really have no choice! Whichever behavior you _ pick, you're going to be ‘‘wrong.’’ So why argue about it? . For example, a husband ma urge his wife to get a well-paying job to help with the family ex- penses. Then, he may begin con- stantly telling her that her income is undermining his place in the family. Fights erupt. If she doesn’t help pay the bills, he says she’s not interested in the Strain he’s under. If she dces br- ing in money, he also says she’s not interested in the strain it puts him under. People who chronically give off double messages are doing it un- consciously. They themselves are confused about the subject. If you attempt to show them that they are putting you in a predicament, they will often insist that you are completely wrong. People trapped in a continual round of double messages often feel overwhelmed. The key point that they often do not see is that they cannot win! You cm free yourself from long-term (chronic) double messages by taking your problem and figuring out alternatives. Ask yourself what would hap- pen if you acted in a certain way. If you realize that this solution won't work because someone yow’re emotionally close to will be critical or angry, stop. Next, think out what would happen if you tried other solu- tions. If you realize the same per- son will be displeased no matter which direction you go in, then you are caught in a double- - message trap. The moment you realize that you cannot please that person in this particular matter, you have the problem half licked. Next, say to yourself, ‘‘Since it is impossible for me to please him/her about this, I might as well please myself.’’ Then do so. Be prepared for the double- message sender to keep you strug- gling in contradictory directions. If you just reply, ‘‘This is what I’ve decided to do about it,’’ the battle will eventually be over. It takes two to fight. Next week: ‘Mind Reading.’’ For the week of Sept. 1-7, 1991 ALL SIGNS Mercury is now ‘‘direct,’’ so... go for it! Mars enters Libra on the Ist. We are all more assertive now.
