70 ~ Friday, June 3, 1990 - North Shore News Ha 8 6OXREAL ESTATE Rental market eases APARTMENT VACANCY rates in the Vancouver met- ropolitan area increased to 0.9 per cent in April 1990, up from 0.4 per cent in Oc- tober and 0.5 per cent in April 1989 according to the semi-annual Vacancy Survey conducted by Canada Mor- tgage and Housing Corpora- tion. In the Vancouver metro- politan area, the annual in- crease in vacancy rates was highest among the municipalities in the urban core. The vacancy rate in North Vancouver District increased to 2.2 per cent from 0.4 per cent in April 1989 and in West Vancouver to 2.3 per cent from 0.3 per cent. In the City of Vancouver, the rate increased to 1.0 per cent from 0.5 per cent, with the highest rates reported on the westside of the city. The lowest rate was found in Delta and New Westminster at 0.1 per cent. In April the rate of rent increase moderated over a year ago. In April 1990, the average rent level for a one-bedroom reached $548, up 9.4 per cent; two- bedroom were $723, up 9.5 per cent. Whereas in Oc- tober 1989 the annual rent << increase was 11.4 per cent in the one-bedroom units and {2.2 per cent in the two- bedroom units. Rental markets in outlying arsas remain very tight. Vacancy rates in all municipalities in the Fraser Valley and coastal regions reported lower rates. In April, apartment vacancy rates in the Chilliwack area declined to 0.1 per cent from 1.1 per cent, Matsqui area declined to 0.3 per cent from 0.4 per cent, Powell River to 0.7 per cent from 1.2 per cent and there were no vacancies found in Squamish.
