LYRN CANYON DEVELOPMENT Mayor clarifies issue Dear Editor: Let’s set the record straight. Lynn Canyon Park wil} not be logged or developed. Some 350 plus acres stretching from Rice Lake Road south to the landfill have long been, and will - continue to be, Lynn Canyon Park in ali its wilderness glory. There are no plans for development. The Ecology Centre, Suspension Bridge, Twin Falls, 30’ swimming hole, the Centenniai Trail, Old Lillooet Trail and environs are sacrosanct. The entire 350 plus acres shown on North Vancouver District’s maps is designated for parks pur- poses by the Seymour Official Community Plan adopted in 1985 and is zoned for that use. Any change would require bylaw x amendments and public hearings. None are proposed. What has been incorrectly labelled the ‘‘save Lynn Canyon Park issue’’ is two potential neighborhoods also shown in the 1985 plan. They are proposed to the east of the park on the plateau between the Lynn and Seymour Rivers. But increased environmental awareness and appreciation of the wilderness areas have brought into question residential development on these publically owned lands. And in North Vancouver District Council’s unanimous view, rightly so. That is why council responded by showing these areas as “Under Review” in the District Official Community Plan Bylaw. That is WV alderman is OPEN LETTER TO WEST VANCOUVER ALDERMAN .ANDY DANYLIU At a recent West Vancouver District Council meeting, a drive- through facility for MacDonald’s Restaurant was discussed and subsequently turned down. A comment was attributed to you, Ald. Andy Danyliu, in the Aug. 9 North Shore News, that astounded me. It is reported that you said, ‘‘I don’t think West Vancouwverites are into drive-in restaurants. More likely clients would be the people who do the renovation work in the homes of West Vancouverites.”’ The dictionary defines a snob as “2 vulear person who apes gentili- ty, cultivates or truckles to those of higher social position, or regards the claims of wealth and position with an exaggerated and contemptible respect.”? You sir, then, appear to be a snob. I know many pecple who do renovate houses and they are often very successful people. Successful in raising happy, healthy families and contributing to a better society by volunteering their time as sport coaches, Big Brothers and other similar projects. Some of the people who you seem to hold in such high esteem are fabulously wealthy and live in palatial homes. The fact that some of them are criminals who have made their fortunes by dealing in drugs or arms and, in some in- stances, by defrauding ordinary people and governments out of millions of dollars does not seem | ~ Link options T HERE are obvious drawbacks to building any new highway link from the Lower Mainiand to the Squamish-Whistler area, but the Indian Arm route championed by North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jack Davis appears to have the fewest drawbacks for the North Shore and the most benefits for area ’ transportation. Recommendations from a governnaent-appointed Squamish-Liliccet transperiation committee called for an upgrading of the entire Squamish highway to four lanes or building a new’ four-lane highway through the Capilano watershed. But the former, with a pricetag estimated at $400 million, would disrupt the ever-increasing traffic flows on the highway for years. And highway safety con- cerns would still likely not be entirely satisfied. The Capilano route, which has been shelved and dusted off regulariy siace it was first proposed in the | _ 1930s, would threaten violation of pristine drinking water supplies and create 2 watershed policing nigftmare. It would also require major highway right-of-way access through North Vazcouver, and it would still on- ly run from North Vancouver to Britaunis Beach. Perhaps the biggest point in favor of the Indian Arm route for North Shore residents is that, unlike the other options, it routes traffic around, not through, the North Shore. With area transportation systems, especially the two Burrard Inlet crossings, already overtaxed, it is an aiternative that makes the most sense now and for the future. why we have hired consultants to review land use options in con- junction with a committee in- cluding ratepayers, users aad en- vironmental groups. That is why we will await the consultant’s report and recommendations be- fore proceeding with the Official ‘Community Plan and _ further public hearings. Resolution of this lend-use issue is a priority for all, including members of council, who live in and love our community. Devel- opment of Lynn Canyon Park is not an issue. Expansion of park area to the east thoughts on these facts are wel- comed. Marilyn Baker, Mayor North Vancouver District a ‘snob’ to matter tc people like you. Wealth seems to be all that counts, not how it is made, It is ironic that you should be uttering such claptrap in this year that sees the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. It was at- titudes like yours that cost Marie Antoinette and others their heads. Should the tumbrils ever rumble through the streets of Ambleside, Mr. Danylui, I'm sure you will have earned a first-class seat in them, and as you climb the steps to keep your appointment with Madame Guillotine, if there is any justice in this world, the guillotine will be in the shadow of the Gold- en Arches.
