MAILBOX CABLE SERVICE Shaw strategy slammed Dear Editor: Under the guise of service, Shaw Cable is invading the privacy of my home. Apparently I should be happy that they are going to chan- nel a service, that I do not want, into my home and then place the onus on me to discontinue this service. Shaw Cable’s decision to employ this marketing strategy is fun- damentally disrespectful of its subscribers, Shaw is well aware that a certain number of subscribers will neglect to decline this service for a variety of reasons and that many of those same subscribers will regretfully pay the surcharge when they receive the bill. This is chicanery in the market place that will harm most those individuals least able to protect themselves. Ar honorable marketing strate- gy would be to discontinue this free gift at the appointed time and allow subscribers who desire the service te arrange for continua- tion. However, this choice would seriously decrease Shaw’s pro- jected income from the early mon- ths of the service: income inflated by the subscription fees charged to unwary consumers. I see uo reason why I should have to protect myself, in the privacy of my own home, from predators in the marketplace. I, for one, will not support such marketing tactics and will not subscribe to the service only because of the strategy Shaw has chosen to market it. Tell me why such subtle thievery is permitted? Carclyn Iker North Vancouver Real estate board should be re-educated Dear Editor: ; In reference to your article “Housing Market Sizzies”’ in Fri- day’s North Shore News dated March 24, it seems the Real Estate Board spokesman has been fed a lot of hogwash when citing the criteria for property assessments. As homeowners whose assess- ments and property taxes have been skyrocketing since 1981, as a result of artificially inflated house prices, we would like to set the re- cord straight. In the past 10 years or so, the sole criterion for assessing residen- tial property has been, and still is, artificially inflated land values. We ought to know, since not one assessor showed up at our door since 1981, and only after pro- testing vigorously in the last few years did he visit us last June, only to confirm our suspicions. Depreciation and age were ignored and the huge increase was arrived at before his visit. m Divorce gi Maintenance m Custody Separation Agreements ° fancy grade ©2 boxes for $499 If Miss Broadfoot is correct, why then should an old shack be assessed for over $300,000? Fur- thermore, flipping has been going on ground us for years and is still going on. The Real Estate industry should stop brainwashing the public, for after all, who stands to profit from it? If we accept the board's story as fact, then perhaps we have been unjustifiably gouged for too many years by the assessor, and a roll- back is due. As for Mayor Campbell's statement (as quoted in Doug Col- lins’ column of March 22) that “*he’s sorry if some people have to lose their homes,"’ it reeks of discrimination and is undemocratic. Those who choose to stay in their own homes should not be pe- nalized, for they are not in the competition. ‘‘No one can deter- mine what is too much...” says Mitten, and then he goes on to say | ry John Lakes m James L. Rodgers 109 | WE NOW CARRY ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES “the real estate industry has educated the public to know what to accept and what not to accept.”’ They have no business interfer- ing with the market in the first place and causing havoc to our assessments. Maybe they are the ones who should be re-educated. J. Siebert North Vancouver ENRICH YOUR FAM UFE HOST AN OVERSEAS STUDENT Remuneration for room and board. Short or long terms available.
