Al6-Sunday News, April 20, 1980 Polar bear ~ may recover But still ‘’very, very sick’’ WINNIPEG (UPC) - The lone survivor of an_ ex- periment in which three polar bears were dunked in crude oil may _ recover, though she still suffers from an infection in one shoulder. “She’s still a very, very sick animal,” said Clive Roots, director of Assiniboine Park Zoo where the bear has been treated since Mar. 25. However, he added, “the last couple of days there has been ae definite” im- provement, especially with regard to her total food intake. Yesterday, she ate four pounds of liver and fish.” Roots said Thursday the bear started to show signs of serious infection in_ her shoulder last week, and stopped eating. He speculated might have infection resulted from injecuons the bear was given through her oil-stained fur by veterinarians who tried to help it recover from kidney and liver damage caused by her immersion in an oil and brine solution in February in Churchill, Man. He said there was also a possibility the animal had already suffered an injury which became infected when she was subjected along with two other bears to the bath designed to test how wild animals would react to oil pollution. The bears surprised researchers for the federal northern affairs department by ingesting large amounts of the oil as they licked their fur clean, instead of rolling in sawdust and snow to clean themselves as expected. One animal died in March and the other was destroyed to stop its suffering. BROUGHT TOGETHER to share experiences in thelr new country, Canada, this happy group of young students who have English as their second language met last week at Fromme Elementary School in Lynn Valley and tried out various foods from their respective countries.
