12 - Wednesday, November 30, 1988 - North Shore News WV speed ramps to be installed IN RESPONSE to repeated complaints about the traffic in a 1700 block laneway, West Vancouver District will be installing its first speed deterrent ramp. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer The lane, which connects 17th and 18th streets a half a block up from Marine Drive, receives a dai- ly traffic volume of more than 800 cars. According to local resident Ed- ward Guy, most of the traffic is comprised of eastbound vehicles that are avoiding the nearby traf- fic light on Marine Drive. “I'm not entirely sure that the ramps will deter this traffic vol- ume,’’ Guy told West Vancouver District Council Monday night. The ramps, which rise about five inches over 10 feet, and are less of an impediment to pedestrians than speed bumps, are successfully in use in the City of Vancouver. District engineers said the ramps are the only safe, practical, physi- cal way to address the concerns of area residents. The lane speed limit will also be changed from 25km/h to 20 km/h, for which the speed ramps are designed. ‘ Outgoing Ald. Gordon Rowntree was concerned that in- Stallation of the ramps, the first on municipal property, would set a precedent for more such installa- tions. “It looks like the thin edge of the wedge to me,’’ said Rowntree. This is a ‘‘test installation’’ of the ramps, which will be monitored by the engineering department for six months, at which time a relevant policy may be considered.
