Social misfit John Burns (Dan Ackroyd) would rephrase it to, ‘‘Anyone who sees Dr. Lawrence Baird (David Clennon) ought to seek professional help.” Baird is the quack director of a Chicago asylum and Burns is his worst nightmare; asane and feisty inmate. He is so enraged by Burns’ smart-alec attitude, he is about to have him committed to a prison for medical experiments when fate steps in. Ina rush of events, Burns escapes, assumes Dr. Baird’s iden- tity and lands a position-as substitute on 2 popular L.A. radio phone-in show. His common sense approach heats up the ratings and gives him celebrity status. Only Donald Becker (Walther Matthau), a fellow fringe-dweller, recognizes the bogus doctor for what he is. Meanwhile, the show’s original host, Dr. Maitlin (Charles Grodin) has gone to London to recover from a nervous breakdown. How-, ever, his condition only worsens. First, he bumps into the real Dr. Baird. Then, he discovers his wife has had some private sessions with his business partner. Packing a pistol, the deranged shrink heads back to Lotus Land to settle the score. Showing that psychiatrists are as crazy as their patients is as old as Freud, but here Michael Ritchie has directed a funny satire that Art contest offers $70,000 ENTRIES ARE being accepted for a $10,000 art contest with the theme of Water and Its Usefulness to Industry, hosted by the Federa- tion of Canadian Artists. Open to all British Columbia ar- tists, the contest will be judged by slides only by a panel of five well-known artists and gallery directors. Prizes are provided by Canfor Corporation, and artists may work in any or all of the mediums of oils, acrylics, watercolors or draw- ing for the contest. Artists should select their sub- jects with care, and even hobby ar- tists have a good chance of winn- ing given the broad theme, notes co-organizer Yvonne Hales. “If they stop and put their minds to it there’s a lot of ideas,” she said. An_ information brochure is available at the Federation of Ca- nadian Artists. Deadline is July 3!. For more details call the federation at 681- 8534. With Fred’s con-man savvy, Benny and No. 5 become embroiled in a gem heist and a scheme to mass market the little robots. Oh yes, there’s also a feeble romantic subplot between Benny and a Simpson’s buyer, Sandy (Cynthia Gibb). This film shamelessly recycles ideas from better comedies. The music is elevator pap, the acting shoddy and even the sky doesn’t match from shot to shot. Worst of all, the supposedly cute robot comes “
