32 - Wednesday, November 12. 1986 - North Shore News Lifestyles ‘Students compete THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District’s annual essay contest for secondary school stu- dents will be held again this school year, with four new topics. The contest is open to all stu- dents in Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 in schools located in Greater Van- couver and, for the first time, it is also officially being extended to include schools in Langley City, Langley Township, Matsqui, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. These five municipalities are not members of the GVRD but par- ticipate in some of its functions, like parks, the water system and the sewerage system. This year’s topics deal with housing, farmland preservation, emergency preparation and trans- portation, First prize has been increased to $350, second to $250 and third to $150. There are also 10 Merit Awards of family memberships to the UBC Museum of Anthropology or the Vancouver Public Aquarium in Stanley Park. Submissions may be made throughout the school year but no later than Friday, April 10, 1987. Entries should not be more than 2,000 words, typewritten (double- spaced) and include the student's name, age, address, phone number, school, class and a bibli- ography. Entries are judged on content, research, general appearance and use of language. Graphics may be included in essays. These are the four topics for the 1987 contest: Housing Is the single family house doom- ed in Greater Vancouver? Will we all be living in high-rises in 25 years? Discuss what living accom- modation will be like in this region 25 years from now. Farmland Presezvation As the population of the Lower Mainland grows there is increasing pressure to develop. existing agricultural land for residential, industrial, commercial and other uses. How important is the preser- vation of farmland in this region? Consider the question from various points of view...the farm- er, the developer, the consumer and residents of the region. Emergency Preparation {s Greater Vancouver prepared for an emergency like an earth- quake, tidal wave, major chemical accident or plane crash? Discuss emergency planning procedures. What can be done to improve them? Transportation Do we need more freeways in Greater Vancouver? More public transit? Should transit be given preference on public thorough- fares?
