RATTAN furniture comes from
‘‘rontang,’’ a _vine-like wood
native to India and South Eastern
Asia.

In its natural state, rattan can
grow to lengths exceeding a hun-
dred feet.

Rattan is then cut into specific
length, after it has been carefully
scraped and dried. It is then suit-
able for making furniture.

{t should be noted that rattan is
a solid material throughout, rang-
ing in diameter from a_ few
millimeters to three inches.

Wicker is rattancore reed and is
used in weaving.

Rattan outer peel is usually
woven into cane seats, backs, dec-
orative accents and also used as
binding materials to bind the rat-
tan and wicker furniture to make
them sturdy.

The natural beauty of rattan
should be preserved. For example,
knots and other natural charac-
teristics should be visible in spite
of light sanding and other
preparatory operations.

Rattan furniture is adaptable to
the moods of various areas in a
home and it is less formal than
wooden, plastic or leather fur-
niture. It can be used in all
seasons, indoors and outdoors.

Rain and dampness does not af-
fect it. Occasional mist will pre-
vent it from drying out. It seems
delicate, but is extremely strong
and durable.

To care for rattan furniture,
regular dusting and wiping is re-
quired. A mild solution of water
and detergent will usually remove
surface stains. If the binding is
loose, glue the binding using hot
glue.

If you wish to renew the ap-
pearance of rattan furniture, sand
the rattan lightly first, then add a
coat of shellac. Give wicker a coat
of sealer. When dry, apply a coat
of paint using a spray.

Most rattan and wicker pieces
have locse cushions. It is very
easy to change the look of the
room by simply making new
covers.
