a wed os 56 - Wednesday, August 20, 1986 - North Shore News - Entertainment. ce! the THE DOWNTOWN Eastside Arts Festival - August 20 thru October 4 — is a personal invitation to witness the downtown eastside in motion, The Firehall Theatre will be home to the celebration, a gather- ing of articis, musicians, dancers ard 2ctors who, through their art, personify the history and culture of survival that has defined Strathcona. The theme of the festival is be- ing expressed with paint, a 50-foot wall and Richard Tetrault, a resi- dent artist of the downtown eastside. Tetrault works out of a warehouse studio filled with a col- lection of canvases that are his persona! journal of life in the downtown eastside. He began work on the western wall of the Firehall Theatre's courtyard July 16, a mural that will capture the downtown eastside’s diverse character. Running parallel to Tetrault’s work in progress — the painting of the mural will continue throughout the festival dates — will be per- formances like Sandra Acton’s ebrates Hotel, choreography that reflects the owners, users and losers of a downtown castude hotel. Opening Doors, Vancouver's East: End by Carole Stter and Daphne Marlatt is being adapted into series of interlinking theatrical dramas for performance during the festival, During the last week of the fes- tival the Firehall Theatre will be taken over by close to 70 artists of the downtown castside, an am- bitious exhibit of talent and perception. One More Stop On The Freedom Train, a Black Theatre Canada production, begins the first leg of a national tour at the Firehall and celebrates the fact that there was a strong black compo- nent in the downtown castside community. This is just a sample of the tal- ent and entertainment that will be the Downtown Eastside Arts Fes- tival. This project was made possible through the Department of Com- munication’s Special Granting Program, in Celebration of Van- couver’s Centennial.
